Roman Anthony's Sophomore Slump Deepens With Rough Game Vs. Astros originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Coming off his dominant World Baseball Classic, Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony entered the 2026 season with extremely high expectations. Despite being just 21 years old with only 71 Major League games under his belt, many expected him to build on his impressive rookie campaign and emerge as an MVP candidate this year.
Those predictions may have been premature, however, as Anthony's sophomore season is off to a sluggish start. After cracking three hits on Opening Day, he's gone just 1-for-17 with 10 strikeouts over his last four games -- all Red Sox losses.
Anthony went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Tuesday's loss to the Houston Astros, just the third four-strikeout game of his career. He's now hitless in his last 14 at-bats with nine strikeouts during that span.
Can I help you Mr. Anthony?

Boston's young leadoff hitter looks a bit lost at the plate right now, or at least out of sorts. In one at-bat against Hunter Brown on Tuesday, he struck out after taking three straight fastballs down the middle.
Perhaps his confidence is shaken, or maybe he's pressing. The entire Red Sox lineup is in a funk, so maybe he's trying to do too much.
Anthony started last year slowly as well and took a few weeks to heat up, so perhaps that will happen again this year. His talent is still there and he'll figure things out eventually, but it may take some time if the league has adjusted to him.
