The unpredictability of the NFL draft is what makes it such an appealing event each year. Sometimes players are picked earlier than anticipated. Other times, players go significantly later than expected, as was the case with Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 draft.

The projected first-round pick fell all the way to the fifth round as QB-needy teams like the New Orleans Saints passed on Sanders in favor of lower-ranked quarterbacks. The Saints shocked many when they took Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round with Sanders on the board.

Atlanta Falcons legend Roddy White even stuck up for Sanders on social media. White said the Saints did the Falcons a favor with their "trash" pick. Whether or not Shough ends up being a successful quarterback, the idea that he would go ahead of Sanders is hard to fathom based on their respective bodies of work.

There was genuine confusion as to why so many teams passed on Sanders. It was one thing that he fell out of the first round, but Sanders had a great season in 2024 and there was no excuse for him to be passed over for so many lesser quarterbacks.

While the rumor was that Sanders did not interview well, his mix of confidence, accuracy and production warranted a Day 2 pick at the latest.

If Sanders goes on to become the player almost every scout projected him to be, White may be right about the Saints doing the Falcons a favor. Shough has good upside as well, and perhaps New Orleans just wanted to avoid a media firestorm under first-year head coach Kellen Moore.

Prior to his coaching career, Moore was a prolific quarterback at Boise State. He went undrafted in 2012 before signing with the Lions as a free agent. Leading up to the draft, Moore appeared on an episode of "Gruden's QB Camp" and was asked how he handles criticism.

"Smile at them, say thank you, and remember their name," Moore responded.

Sanders should take Moore's advice and use his draft fall as motivation to make those NFL teams look foolish.
