Any quarterback joining the New Orleans Saints would like to have an endorsement from Archie Manning, so you have to think this vote of confidence came as good news to rookie QB Tyler Shough. Manning spoke with Mike Detillier and Bobby Hebert on WWL Radio after the Saints picked Shough at No. 40 overall in the 2025 NFL draft, a move he praised as "fantastic."
Manning acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Derek Carr's injured throwing shoulder made quarterback a major need in the draft. And if the Saints have to ask Shough to start right away, Manning feels he's ready: "If he happened to be thrown out there, he’s better prepared than most. It’s a tough transition, I don’t care how old you are or how much football you’ve played, it’s a huge step, but I think he’s very qualified and I absolutely love the pick. I thought the pick was just fantastic."
Shough spent seven years in college between stops at Oregon, Texas Tech, and Louisville, only once starting more than seven games in a single season. Injuries were a persistent challenge for him. It's something Manning sympathized with.
"That’s the worst side of football, being hurt, and bless his heart, you just, you know, what guys go through when they get injured, when they continue to get injured just year after year is just so frustrating. That’s why I’m really, really proud of Tyler the way he hung in there. Sometimes you just, you get enough and you say I’ve got to find something else to do, but it’s a real testament to him that he kept fighting and of course he wound up changing schools again, which is a pretty popular thing right now. It’s just a great story," Manning said.
We'll be watching Shough closely over the summer. Until Carr returns to the team (or, if he ever does), we'll have to. Spencer Rattler is going to challenge him for the starting job, but the Saints have already made their choice by drafting Shough when they did. And if Manning's word is anything to go by, Shough shouldn't keep that competition close for long.
