The Houston Rockets entered Game 5 against the Golden State Warriors with their backs against the wall. They were just one loss away from exiting the NBA playoffs, so they really needed the win to extend the series.
Sure enough, the Rockets played with clear urgency right from the start of their Wednesday showdown—even making history in the process.
At halftime, the Rockets were up 76-49. Fred VanVleet led Houston with an impressive 19 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Dillon Brooks and Alperen Sengun had 12 points each after two quarters of play.
The Rockets' hot start not only helped them get the win, but it also help them set a new playoff record.
"ROCKETS DROP 76 POINTS IN THE 1ST HALF," the NBA posted. "This is the most in a half for Houston in any playoff game in the play-by-play era (1997-98)!"
With Houston leading 93-64 and with 5:50 left in the third quarter, the Warriors waved the white flag and sent their starters—Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, Brandin Podziemski and Buddy Hield—to the bench.
As for the Rockets, they made sure to hold on to their lead. All Rockets starters scored in double digits, led by Fred VanVleet's 26 points. Amen Thompson finished with 25, while Dillon Brooks had 24.
