Rocchi: ‘Ref Cam can help people understand’ what referees can see

Refereeing chief Gianluca Rocchi hopes the first ever use of Ref Cam in Serie A for Juventus vs. Inter can ‘allow people at home to understand’ what the officials can see.

It kicks off at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin at 17.00 UK time (16.00 GMT).

This is not just the Derby d’Italia, but also an historic moment, as for the first time the Ref Cam will be used in Serie A.

It means official Andrea Colombo will have a little camera attached to his earpiece that can feed footage back to the television coverage.

“It allows people at home to understand what the referee can see from the pitch, and it is not necessarily what you might expect,” Rocchi told DAZN Italia.

“I told the officials to pretend it isn’t there and just carry on as normal. This is an opportunity for us to also check if the referee was in the right position and help tutor in future how they can work on the field.”

DAZN Italia also has the regular slow Open VAR, where the footage and audio from the VAR booth is shown, along with a representative of the referees’ association explaining why certain decisions were made.

“We will show as much as possible, because we want to show the correct and incorrect decisions, but above all use this as an educational tool.”
