April 10 (UPI) -- Golfer Robert MacIntyre flipped off the green at Augusta, putting himself at risk for disciplinary action at the 2026 Masters Tournament.

MacIntyre issued the gesture on hole No. 15 during his first round at the major Thursday in Augusta, Ga. The No. 8 player in the Official World Golf Ranking fired an 8-over-80 and was tied for 82nd through his first 18 holes.

PGA Tour officials deferred to those from Augusta National Golf Club when asked Friday about potential disciplinary measures MacIntyre could face due to his actions, which also included the use of expletives in front of fans and smacking his clubs into the lawn of the renowned property.

Augusta officials did not immediately respond when asked about potential discipline for MacIntyre.

Several players commented this week about the expected firm and fast nature the course this week due to the weather in Augusta. MacIntyre was victimized by those conditions, resulting in his poor score.

"The past few years, we've gotten rain at some point in the week," first-round co-leader Sam Burns told reporters. "You could definitely see, even from Monday to today, how much firmer the greens are. They are only going to get firmer.

"As the golf course speeds up, it only gets more difficult out there. I think it's going to be a really good test."

MacIntyre not only struggled with putting, but also found the water hazard multiple times on No. 15. He landed the green in two shots on No. 1, but made par on the par 4. He found the green with his third shot on No. 2, a par 5. MacIntyre two-putted from 15 feet on that hole.

He hit his second shot on No. 3 just 10 feet from the pin. MacIntyre sank a birdie putt with that opportunity. He followed with another par on No. 4.

He then carded bogeys on Nos. 5 and 6 to get to 1-over. That stretch included a two-putt from 7-feet on No. 6. MacIntyre made par on his next two holes, but finished the front nine with a double-bogey. He calmed to card pars on Nos. 10 through 14. He then stepped up to No. 15.

The 2025 U.S. Open runner-up started the 550-yard, par-five hole, dubbed Firethorn, with a 327-yard drive up the fairway. He followed with a 207-yard shot, which found a pond in front of the green.

The Scottish golfer proceeded to hold up the middle finger on his ungloved hand. He went on to hit the green and roll another ball into the water with his next shot, drawing a second stroke penalty. He hit his next shot over the green.

He finally reached the green with his seventh stroke. MacIntyre finished the hole by two-putting from 13 feet. He carded a quadruple bogey.

MacIntyre made par on Nos. 16 and 18. He scribbled another bogey on his scorecard on No. 17. He fired a 5-over-41 on the back nine and is now in danger of missing the cut and could see some sort of punishment based on Augusta's strict code of conduct.

MacIntyre did not speak to reporters after his first round. His 80 was 13 strokes behind Burns and co-leader Rory McIlroy, who fired matching 5-under-67s.

The world No. 8 is scheduled to tee off alongside No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and No. 52 Gary Woodland at 10:19 a.m. EDT Friday at Augusta.

Scheffler, the tournament favorite and winner of two of the last four green jackets, was tied for sixth at 2-under through his first 18 holes. Woodland was tied for 10th at 1-under.
