This time last year, the Washington Commanders were riding high. The team came out of nowhere and had one of the most explosive offenses in the league, with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels playing like a star.
The Commanders went on to make the NFC Championship Game last season, and there was no reason to think the team couldn't get back there this season. Instead, pretty much nothing has gone right, and the Commanders are much closer to being the worst team in the league than the best.
There's been a combination of factors that have led the Commanders to this point, but nobody thought it could get this bad. Entering Week 15, the Commanders have lost eight games in a row and are now sitting at 3-10.
On Friday, former Commanders quarterback Robert Griffin III appeared on 106.7 The Fan to talk about the team's disappointing season. Griffin revealed that the team had planned to add pieces to make a run during the season, but injuries and contract issues derailed the season.
"(Adam Peters) built the team as if JD5 was going to be healthy and we were going to add pieces to be able to help us get over the hump and go to the Super Bowl," explained Griffin. "And then what derailed that?" Injuries, Scary Terry's [McLaurin] contract situation, so it's a totally different set of circumstances."
Before the season, McLaurin held out for a new deal and was often named in trade rumors. The two sides eventually reached an agreement, but Griffin thinks there may have been damage to team chemistry.
As far as injuries, it would be easier to name players who HAVEN'T been hurt this season. Austin Ekeler, Noah Brown, Marshon Lattimore, Dorance Armstrong, Deebo Samuel, Zach Ertz, Daniels, and McLaurin are all key contributors who have either missed time or are out for the season.
It would be hard for any team to overcome that number of injuries, and the Commander simply didn't have the depth to remain competitive.
"You have to say, 'Alright, we gotta retool. We have to get younger on defense, we have to get more speed,'" Griffin said.
Griffin certainly has a point there. The Commanders entered the 2025 season with the oldest average roster in the NFL. Aging players like Bobby Wagner and Von Miller were relied upon too heavily, and it wouldn't be surprising to see an overhaul on defense this offseason.
