Robbie Avila has the potential to be a fan favorite for the Los Angeles Lakers.

That is, if the undrafted rookie out of Saint Louis can actually make the Lakers.

That pursuit of a roster spot didn't get off to a good start in Avila's Summer League debut on Monday for L.A.

He had sat out the Lakers' first two summer games, but he started on Monday in an 88-84 win over the Spurs.

Avila struggled:

• 2 points
• 1 rebound
• 2 assists
• 1 turnover
• 1-6 FG
• 0-2 3FG
• 14 minutes
• Minus-8

Avila didn't have a steal or block.

He's a very specific type of player, not athletic but incredibly skilled.

For Avila to work in the NBA, he'll have to be impactful in the way he links everything together offensively.

In this debut, that didn't happen, and so he wasn't really worth having on the court at all for the Lakers.

There's still time for Avila to make his case, but this wasn't how he would've wanted to start things.

Avila's appearance will bring him doubters. From here on out, he's got to try and prove them wrong.
