Robert Wright III is not going anywhere.
BYU's star point guard has decided to withdraw from the transfer portal and will return to the Cougars, according to ESPN's Jeff Borzello. He was one of the top players in the portal and visited the Kentucky Wildcats, but head coach Kevin Young was able to convince him to return for a second season at BYU.
Wright emerged as one of the best point guards in the country last season, averaging 18.1 points, 4.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per game. He started 35 games for them and made the All-Big-12 Third-Team. He shot 44.5% from the floor, 38.8% from 3-point range, and 81.0% from the free-throw line.
He started his career at Baylor and had a productive freshman season with the Bears before transferring to BYU ahead of the 2025-26 season. With star freshman AJ Dybantsa off to the NBA, Wright is now BYU's top returning player and will look to help them take another step after they went 23-12 and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Wright was ranked as the No. 6 overall player and No. 1 point guard in the portal by On3 before his exit. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
The Cougars have already made several key additions through the portal, landing former Syracuse forward Tyler Betsy and former Kentucky guard Collin Chandler. Both are four-star prospects with On3 ranking Chandler as the No. 32 overall player in the portal and Betsy the No. 163.
