San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan suffered significant injuries after he was involved in a car accident on July 14. His friend and rival head coach of the Los Angeles Rams Sean McVay spoke to reporters on Saturday and talked about Shanahan's accident.
“Most importantly, thank God he and the other person involved is okay,” McVay said via ESPN's Adam Schefter. “Perspective is everything. We talk about that all the time as coaches and everybody goes through different things. I think the most important thing is that he's on the road to recovery, his wife Mandy, and he's got a beautiful family, and I think any time that something like that happens, it shakes you up a little bit. But most importantly, I have talked to him. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and I know he's got an incredible perspective on it all. Kyle's a stud. I have as much respect for him as anybody and he's a friend of mine, and I love him and hope that he's going to have a great recovery.”
McVay gained real traction as an NFL coach under Shanahan when Shanahan was the offensive coordinator in Washington. Shanahan hired McVay as an offensive assistant in 2010 and promoted him to tight ends coach in 2011. McVay took over as Washington's offensive coordinator in 2014 when Shanahan was let go along with head coach Mike Shanahan.
While Shanahan won't be ready to assume his full coaching duties Sunday when the 49ers open training camp, he's not expected to miss the 49ers' season opener against McVay's Rams in Melbourne, Australia according to general manager John Lynch.
Shanahan and McVay have become two of the top coaches in the league since gaining head coaching jobs in the NFC West in 2017. Shanahan leads their head-to-head regular season matchups 11-7, but McVay got their lone playoff game when the 49ers and Rams squared off in the 2022 NFC championship game.
