Despite missing a week of passing league, Hulbert football didn't see many disruptions to its progress.
The Riders didn't attend last week's league at Keys because several players were away at church camps. However, Tuesday, June 23, Hulbert and its team returned to the field and didn't show signs of rust, as they took on Stilwell, Locust Grove, Keys and the Tahlequah junior varsity in the third meeting of the league.
"I was pleased with what we saw today," Rider head coach Chad Botts said. "There were a few missing that we wish were here, but it's hit or miss in the summer."
The offense was run by quarterback Bo Thayer during Tuesday's camp. An incoming senior, Thayer helped guide the offenses play action passes, while also letting some passes fly to the end zone.
Introducing the play action passing game and establishing a defense have been goals for the Riders since the start of the camp.
"[We're] a run-first type team, so some of the things we're looking at are different than other teams," Botts said. "We're going to be looking more at how our play action is working and how that's fitting into our offense. Then our defense is what we really want to figure out – what is best for the scheme."
In addition to setting up the schemes, Botts sees the Riders actively building their depth for next season.
"We're a smaller school, so depth is always a question, and we're just trying to figure out a lot of who we're going to play," Botts said. "We graduated a good group, so we got new leadership coming in, and it is a competition that gives our guys opportunities to step forward."
The Riders will be off the field starting Saturday, June 27 and ending Sunday, July 5. Hulbert will compete in one more passing league Tuesday, July 7, at Keys.
