The Pittsburgh Steelers seemingly hit home run after home run this offseason following a plethora of excellent roster acquisitions. And one such signing, running back Rico Dowdle, shared a surprising revelation about his journey to the Steel City.

According to Dowdle, his mother predicted his signing with Pittsburgh after Mike McCarthy was hired as the new head coach of the Steelers — several months before the standout running back put pen to paper.

“She called me and said, ‘You’re going to Pittsburgh,’” Dowdle said at OTAs. “Like, soon as [McCarthy] got hired, that’s the first thing she said.”

Dowdle, who signed with the McCarthy-led Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2020, spent his first five seasons in the NFL with Dallas before joining the Carolina Panthers in March 2025.

Recording back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons in 2024 and 2025, Dowdle joined the Steelers in March 2026 on a two-year contract — a reunion with McCarthy that was apparently seen from miles away.
