The Terre Haute Rex — the hottest Eastern Conference team in the second half of the Prospect League baseball season — split a pair of games Thursday night at Bob Warn Field.
Terre Haute beat the visiting Decatur Bean Ballers 11-1 in a makeup game, rescheduled from a June 26 rainout.
Then the Rex lost 10-4 to the Bean Ballers in Thursday’s nightcap, dropping Terre Haute’s second-half record to 8-1.
Going into Saturday night’s game at the Kokomo Creek Chubs (Friday’s scheduled clash at Thrillville was canceled by rain), the Rex still held a one-game lead over Danville (7-2) in the Eastern Conference’s Central Division as the teams resume regular schedules following this week’s All-Star Game break in the wood-bat summer collegiate league.
Terre Haute locked up the first-game victory in five innings after jumping to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Nomar Garcia’s two-run homer to left field.
After Decatur scored its lone run in the second, the Rex secured the win with a six-run fourth inning and a three-run fifth. The big hits included Nazhir Bergen’s RBI double, Renn Harper’s two-run double and Nate Millington’s RBI triple to center.
Gio Mendoza, Bergen and Millington had two hits each.
Jean Quezada pitched all five innings to improve his record to 3-2, striking out six Bean Ballers and walking one.
The nightcap didn’t go as well for the Rex.
Decatur scored three first-inning runs, but Terre Haute quickly retaliated with a four-run second inning.
Wally Diaz hit an RBI double and Millington drove in two runs with a single in the second.
But the Bean Ballers (3-8) scored seven unanswered runs through the next three innings, and held Terre Haute scoreless.
A foursome of Rex pitchers shared the mound duties, striking out eight Decatur batters and walking seven.
