The brother of Arizona State and Cardinals legend Pat Tillman was taken into custody in connection with a car crash in the San Jose, California area, that caused a fire at a post office, according to multiple reports.
Fire crews responded after a vehicle crashed into the lobby of Almaden Valley post office shortly before 3 a.m., Sunday, July 20, according to NBC Bay Area's website.
The site reported that a source with knowledge of the investigation told NBC Bay Area the suspect identified himself as Pat Tillman’s brother, Richard Tillman, 47, and had live-streamed the event on a social media platform. Several other outlets reported Tillman as the suspect.
San Jose Police had not confirmed the suspect's identity as of late Sunday afternoon. Fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze and no serious injuries were reported.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office inmate booking site showed a Richard Tillman was booked into its main jail on Sunday, July 20, with a court hearing scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, The Arizona Republic confirmed on Sunday. He was denied bail, the site says.
Pat Tillman starred for the Arizona State football team and was part of the Sun Devils' 1997 Rose Bowl squad. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals, but walked away from a new contract offer to join the U.S. Army Rangers in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Another brother, Kevin, also joined with him.
Pat Tillman, who was born in the San Jose area, was killed by friendly fire in 2004 while serving in Afghanistan.
An annual race, Pat's Run, is held each spring in Tempe to honor him and raise funds for the Pat Tillman Foundation.
