Anthony Richardson is competing for the Indianapolis Colts' backup quarterback job with Riley Leonard, however, his trade request remains on the table.
Richardson initially made that trade request in late February, but the Colts have been unable to find a trade partner.
As of now, it remains to be seen if or when a deal could get done, but there is perhaps a "soft deadline" on the horizon, as noted by The Athletic's James Boyd.
As Boyd wrote recently, on the third day of training camp, Richardson is due a $4.2 million roster bonus. If Richardson remains on the team up to that point and the Colts pay that bonus, any team could then acquire Richardson and only owe him $1.1 million for the 2026 season.
That significantly reduced salary cap cost could be enticing and help facilitate trade conversations.
Richardson is still just 23 years old as he embarks on his fourth NFL season. The talent and upside is undeniable, but injuries and accuracy issues have limited his production.
Earlier this offseason, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported that Richardson would like to land "extension of the McVay-Shanahan-LaFleur tree from which to learn."
