As of late Wednesday night, the New Orleans Saints were reportedly making calls about potentially moving back from their No. 9 selection in this year’s draft, per Fox Sports insider Jordan Schultz. Many around the league believe that the team is looking to acquire additional draft compensation to then use those picks to target a quarterback in the back end of the first round. A move back from No. 9 would mark the first time since 2007 in Mickey Loomis’ tenure as general manager that the team would trade down, not up.

During his pre-draft press conference on Wednesday, Loomis acknowledged that while his record says something different (he's moved up 27 consecutive times without a trade down), he isn't philosophically opposed to trading down. Maybe the right scenario presents itself where the Saints can move down a few spots and add more picks.

The potential of the team sliding back from No. 9, allows for conversation to be had on which teams could be interested in obtaining the selection. Could the Denver Broncos be interested in making a move? Much speculation recently has revolved around Sean Payton’s eagerness to add a “joker” to his offense. Players like Tyler Warren, Ashton Jeanty, Colston Loveland and Omarion Hampton would fit that mold. Maybe the Miami Dolphins look to jump ahead of a team like the 49ers to grab a defensive back such as Texas’ corner Jahdae Barron with Jalen Ramsey seeking a trade. The Indianapolis Colts are another team to watch out for at the tight end position as well.

If the team does elect to move back with any of these teams, they’ll likely acquire an additional second or third round selection which gives them a ton of flexibility if they were to move back into round one for a quarterback. Moving into the mid teens-early twenties, would likely shift their cloud of players a little bit. Guys like Tetairoa McMillan, Will Johnson, Jihaad Campbell and James Pearce Jr. become much better values at those later spots. There’s also the potential for the Saints to add an offensive tackle as well, such as Oregon’s Josh Conerly who the team seems to be very high on.

Taking one of these players while acquiring picks would seem like a smart move for a team that has multiple voids to fill on both sides of the ball—but none greater than the quarterback position. Moving back into round one for a Jaxson Dart or Sheduer Sanders, gives the Saints a viable option going into next season while also not jeopardizing assets in the future. With Derek Carr’s time in New Orleans just about over, the team is in prime position to execute a move of this kind.
