A short-lived Cowboys star is coming back to the NFL, but now he'll be wearing enemy colors.
DeMarco Murray is being hired by the Kansas City Chiefs to be the team's next running backs coach, according to a late Wednesday report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
A third-round draft pick in 2011, Murray played for the Cowboys for four seasons and is the franchise's single-season rushing leader thanks to his 1,845-yard final campaign with the team in 2014. That year saw Murray lead the league in rushing, earn a spot on the All-Pro first team, and win Offensive Player of the Year honors.
After Dallas, Murray went to Philadelphia for one year and then finished his playing career with Tennessee, racking up just over 7,000 yards and three Pro Bowl nods over seven seasons.
Murray segued to coaching quickly, working with the running backs at the University of Arizona in 2019 and then taking on the same role at his alma mater of Oklahoma for the next six years.
Though he played just 53 games with the Cowboys, Murray remains No. 7 on the franchise's all-time leading rusher list and is still tied with Emmitt Smith for the club's best career yards-per-game average (85.4).
The Cowboys reportedly showed interest in Murray for their own running backs coach role last year but hired Derrick Foster instead. The Chiefs job will be the first NFL post for Murray, who turns 39 on Feb. 12.
