Kansas City Chiefs running backs coach DeMarco Murray spoke with the media recently at OTAs. He revealed the coaching philosophy he wants to instill in his players.

“I think the first thing is communication. You want to have great communication with those guys, and again, you build from trust,” said Murray, “I want to show these guys, obviously, what communication is and making sure that we’re all on the same page and understanding what it takes to be a successful running back in this league and especially in this offense. It starts with obviously ball security and protecting the quarterback, and then obviously, doing some great thing with the ball in your hands.”

Murray previously coached at the University of Oklahoma as the running backs coach since 2020 and will enter his first season as an NFL coach.

“A lot of those guys can do that but again, for us, we want to protect the quarterback and be extremely detailed in how we do things,” said Murray, “I always talk to our guys about being the best players on the field and that starts with stretching, the walkthrough and just knowing your job, inside and out, then knowing the why’s behind the offense and why we’re calling certain plays, so it’s been great. Those guys have been really good, and they’ve been great students of the game, taking things that we’ve talked about from the classroom to the field, so it’s been very, very good.”

Murray retired as a player from the NFL after seven years, accumulating 7,174 career rushing yards and 49 career rushing touchdowns. He earned three Pro Bowl seasons and, in 2014, was named Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year while with the Dallas Cowboys.
