After an exceedingly successful stop here during the 2025 PWHL Takeover Tour, it looks like Vancouver hockey fans may be getting a PWHL team of their own. Earlier today, reports emerged of the PWHL expanding to Vancouver after the announcement of a “major” press conference taking place on Wednesday. Shortly after, Patrick Johnston of The Province confirmed that this is related to the PWHL’s expansion. It’s expected that this team will play at the Pacific Coliseum.

On January 8, 2025, the Montréal Victoire and Toronto Sceptrestook over Rogers Arena, drawing in a sold-out crowd of 19,038. According to Statista, this breaks nearly all of the Vancouver Canucks’ average season attendance records since the 2005–06 season. The total attendance of all nine stops combined was 123,601, with Vancouver taking the crown for the highest attendance throughout the tour. Vancouver has been an expansion-favourite since talks of growing the league began — and this was before the tour made its stop at Rogers Arena.

The PWHL is currently made up of the Victoire, Sceptres, Minnesota Frost, Ottawa Charge, New York Sirens, and Boston Fleet. It’s expected that they will add two more teams to this list once they’ve announced their expansion. With Vancouver looking to be the first, fans turn their attention to the second expansion team. Currently, the second expansion favourite looks to be Seattle, who hosted 12,608 fans during their Takeover Tour stop.

The possible announcement of a Vancouver PWHL team comes only a day after Vancouver Rise FC played their first ever game at BC Place. Part of the newly-established Northern Super League, the Rise took on Calgary Wild FC last night, marking the start of their inaugural season. With the “rise” of the NSL and the expected announcement of a PWHL, Vancouver is starting to become a prime location for women’s sports leagues.
