Just a couple of days before the 2026 NBA draft, the Oklahoma City Thunder have made their first move of the offseason. They have traded Aaron Wiggins to the Atlanta Hawks for two future second-round picks, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
The Thunder will receive Atlanta's 2030 second-round pick and the least favorable of a 2032 Atlanta/Los Angeles Lakers second-round pick.
Well, Wiggins' departure had been kinda known for a while. He was on the outside of OKC's playoff rotation by the end of the year. His offense regressed across the board. He averaged 9.4 points on 43.1% shooting, 3.1 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 65 games this past season. He shot 35.6% from 3 on 4.2 attempts.
With their payroll about to balloon, the Thunder needed to shed salary elsewhere. Examining their books, Wiggins was one of the more likely candidates. He has three years, $25.4 million left on his deal. That includes a team option for the 2028-29 season.
Bummer. Wiggins is one of OKC's best developmental stories. He was a fine role player over the last five seasons and helped the Thunder bring home a 2025 NBA championship with a career year. Going No. 55 in the 2021 NBA draft, he worked his way up from a two-way rookie to a real rotation player.
Now, Wiggins gets a fresh start with the Hawks. And the Thunder get some draft capital back for the future. This is probably the best deal they could've gotten. Considering his trade value is probably at a low.
