Football governing body FIFA plans to formally discuss lifting the ban on all Russian teams to allow them to compete in international competitions again, British broadcasters Sky News said.
According to the report, the move comes in response to the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision to provisionally lift the suspension of Russia's Olympic Committee (ROC) and end its recommendations to sports federations for a strict vetting process for Russian athletes.
Russia and its ally Belarus were suspended by FIFA and European football ruling body UEFA after Moscow launched its war against Russia in March 2022.
Russia had been banned by FIFA from the qualifiers for the 2022 and 2026 men's World Cups as well as the 2023 women's World Cup.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has already spoken out in favour of allowing Russian teams to return earlier this year.
In addition, FIFA announced last month that it would allow all member associations, including Russia, to participate in the new under-15 World Cup and festival, which will take place from October 22 to 31 in Azerbaijan.
Since the ban came into force, Russia men's professional national team has continued to play international matches outside of major tournaments and is ranked 35th in the FIFA world rankings. The same applies to the women's national team, which is ranked 27th.
