The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has reportedly appealed against the eligibility of United States forward Folarin Balogun to play in their World Cup last 16 clash later on Monday.

The Athletic reported that governing body FIFA granted the RBFA the right to appeal a disciplinary committee decision to suspend a one-game ban for the player after he was sent off in the round of 32 match against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Citing sources familiar with the matter, the report said that the RBFA and US Soccer must submit statements and that a member of the FIFA appeal committee, who will not come from the confederations Belgium and the US are members of, will make a ruling.

It was not clear whether the ruling would come before the kick-off of the match in Seattle set for 5pm (0000 GMT Tuesday).

There has been no official confirmation of the appeal.

Belogun received an automatic one-match ban for the red card but FIFA said on Sunday that it had suspended the ban for one year, based on its disciplinary code.

American reports including from the Athletic said that US President Donald Trump had personally intervened by calling FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

The RBFA said it was "astonished" by the FIFA decision which it said was "in direct contradiction" with FIFA's World Cup regulations and that it was "investigating all potential options" in the matter.

The Athletic said that the RBFA has asked FIFA for the full explanation of suspending the suspension.
