The San Francisco 49ers fortified their defensive front after reportedly signing former Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Cam Sample, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed, but Pelissero reported it's a one-year deal for Sample.
The five-year veteran played his entire career in Cincinnati after being selected in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft out of Tulane. He missed the 2024 season after tearing his Achilles before the start of the year.
Sample, 26, recorded two sacks and 17 combined tackles in 2025, adding six quarterback hits and two tackles for loss. Over 61 career games, he has tallied seven sacks despite only making five starts.
The addition of an edge rusher helps the 49ers shore up a position currently plagued by injuries. Both Nick Bosa and Mykell Williams are recovering from ACL injuries, while Keon White is recovering from an off-the-field gunshot wound. Prior to this signing, the only healthy edge rusher on the roster was Sam Okuayinonu.
Sample, who stands at 6-foot-3 and weighs 272 pounds, lacks extensive starting experience but has logged 1,332 defensive snaps over his career, including 234 in 2025. He also brings special teams utility, having played 300 special teams snaps over four years.
With the addition of Sample is notable, it shouldn't dissuade San Francisco from drafting an edge rusher. However, this signing aligns with the report from ESPN that the 49ers aren't targeting this position with their first-round pick.
