MORAVIA — Timing is everything.
The Moravia softball team connected on just five hits off Ami Mockenhaupt on the opening night of regional high school softball postseason play. Four of those hits came with two outs with three driving in all five runs for the Mohawks in a 5-2 win over Bluegrass Conference rival Twin Cedars on Monday.
Two key hits would put Moravia on top and ensure the Mohawks would stay on top. Kenna Spencer grounded a ball into right field with two outs in the opening inning, bringing home Peytin Ellison and Madison Nicoletto to give Moravia an early 2-0 lead in the Class 1A regional first round contest before Layla Ewing dropped a clutch two-run double into shallow right field in the fourth inning, pushing the Mohawk advantage to 4-1.
Breegan Ellison lined an RBI single back up the middle later in the fourth to bring home Ewing, giving Moravia a four-run lead. Cristen Durian doubled in Ashtyn Fee in the top of the sixth, giving the Sabers a chance in the final inning after a pair of hits by Kenndi Ford and Jordyn Greatbatch brought the tying run to the plate with one out before Jamie Self struck out Jayden Weldon and forced Fee to ground out in the top of the seventh.
Twin Cedars ends the season with a record of 4-21. Moravia (11-25) heads to top-ranked Wayne on Wednesday for the Class 1A regional semifinals.
Van Buren County 4, Danville 0
KEOSAUQUA — Addison Brauns carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh, striking out six batters while allowing just two runners to reach base as the Warriors knocked off a Southeast Iowa Superconference south division rival on the opening night of Class 2A regional tournament play.
Aida Troutman doubled twice, including an RBI drive to deep center bringing in Ava Loeffler to give Van Buren County a 2-0 lead. Kayley Snowgren added a two-run single to left later in the fifth inning, opening a four-run advantage in the contest.
Van Buren County (9-12) heads to second-ranked Louisa-Muscatine on Wednesday starting at 7 p.m.
Pekin 19, Mormon Trail 2
GARDEN GROVE — The Panthers drew 14 walks over four innings, jumping out to a six-run lead after just one inning advancing in the Class 1A regional tournament.
Kendra Schultz added a pair of hits, driving in four runs while scoring twice for Pekin. Carlie Gambell added a triple, driving in three runs and scoring twice as part of a two-hit effort for the Panthers.
Pekin (8-19) heads to No. 14 Seymour for the Class 1A regional quarterfinals on Wednesday. Action gets underway at 5 p.m.
Keota 12, Moulton-Udell 0
KEOTA — Jessalyn Aller drove in three runs and scored twice with a double and a triple for Keota while pitching a four-inning shutout in the Class 1A postseason opener.
Rachel Ogden and Kenna Lancaster connected on Moulton-Udell's only two hits of the contest. Lainey Swanson added two hits, including a double, and matched Aller by driving in three runs and scoring twice in the postseason victory.
Moulton-Udell ends the season with a record of 0-18. Keota (11-8) heads to Sigourney to take on the reigning 1A state champions at Schafer Field in the regional quarterfinals on Wednesday.
