Referee banned from World Cup thanks UEFA for Super Cup participation

Referee Omar Artan expressed his gratitude to European ruling body UEFA for the opportunity to officiate the Super Cup match on Wednesday between Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League champions Aston Villa.

"That was my World Cup. Thank you, UEFA. You've made my life better forever," Artan wrote on a football.

The Somalian referee was expected to officiate in the recent World Cup, but he was banned from entering the United States. Authorities in the co-host nation said that Artan had an "association with suspected members of terror organizations."

He was then invited by UEFA to officiate the Super Cup match and became the first non-European to take charge of such game.

PSG defeated Aston Villa 2-1.
