The Cincinnati Reds fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-4 on Sunday afternoon, missing an opportunity to sweep their division rival. The Reds will now head to Milwaukee for a four-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Ryan O’Hearn had a big day for the Pirates, recording three hits and four RBIs on two home runs, including a go-ahead solo shot to break a tie and a three-run homer that broke the game open after a rain delay halted play.

Brady Singer got the start for the Reds after one of his best outings of the season, when he held the Brewers scoreless into the seventh inning earlier this week. Singer allowed five earned runs over 4 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking none against the Pirates.

Singer escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth inning with the Reds trailing 4-2. JJ Bleday drove in Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart after Stewart doubled off the right-field wall to give the Reds their first two runs.

Singer induced a ground ball to shortstop, which De La Cruz threw home for the forceout. He then struck out Brandon Lowe before getting Bryan Reynolds to ground out to end the inning. Reds color commentator Jeff Brantley called Singer’s ability to escape the jam “a miracle.”

Carrying the momentum from Singer’s escape, the Reds jumped on the Pirates’ pitching staff in the fifth inning. After Noelvi Marte walked, Tyler Stephenson doubled down the left-field line to score Marte. Edwin Arroyo later singled down the right-field line, scoring Stephenson to tie the game at 4. Arroyo is hitting just over .470 over his last six games and is 9 for his last 19 at-bats.

From there, the Pirates broke the game open. Following O’Hearn’s solo home run, play was eventually delayed by rain. Pierce Johnson entered for the Reds and issued back-to-back walks before allowing a three-run home run to the scorching-hot O’Hearn. Esmerlyn Valdez added a 461-foot home run later in the game to provide additional insurance, ultimately leading to a 9-4 Pirates victory.

The Reds are now 39-43 and remain in last place in the NL Central. Sunday presented a chance to carry momentum into Milwaukee, but Cincinnati will now have to bounce back against the division’s best team.

Additionally, after Eugenio Suarez was hit by a pitch, the Reds’ designated hitter’s health is in question. Suarez said after the game that his X-ray was inconclusive due to swelling, so be on the lookout for injury updates concerning him.

Eugenio Suarez said his hand was too swollen for the X-rays to show anything so he’s going to get a scan in the morning to find out more. #Redspic.twitter.com/aiv9SbclR9
