Next week's trade deadline should be a busy day for the Cincinnati Reds.

Recently, the Reds lost who may have been their top trade candidate to the injured list.

Infielder/outfielder Spencer Steer was placed on the 10-day IL with a right wrist sprain but will miss an extended period.

Without Steer, Cincinnati's top trade chip could be right-hander Hunter Greene. However, whether the Reds are willing to part with the 26-year-old, who does not reach free agency until 2029, is another story.

"The Reds are drawing significant interest in Greene, according to a person briefed on their discussions who spoke anonymously so they could speak freely," The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal wrote. "They aren’t particularly motivated to trade him, but barring a trade of [Elly] De La Cruz, a move involving Greene might be their best chance to make an impact at the deadline."

Greene could help boost Reds' farm system​

Since returning from the IL, Greene has not looked like his dominant self. In four starts, he has a 7.06 ERA with 22 hits allowed in 21.2 innings.

Greene allowed just 6.3 hits per nine innings in 19 starts in 2025. Before right elbow surgery, the right-hander emerged as one of the best starters in the Majors.

"Depending upon the return, a trade of Greene could jumpstart the franchise. In a thin market for starting pitchers beyond Tarik Skubal, perhaps the Reds will be tempted into such a move," Rosenthal added.

Whether to trade Greene or hold onto him as the ace of the staff is a huge decision for Cincinnati. The organization likely wants to contend in 2027, but Greene could help boost the farm system.
