They're calling it the Landon DuPont draft, the early consensus No. 1 prospect with the University of Michigan for the 2027 NHL Draft.
DuPont, a 6-foot, 190-pound defenseman who committed to the Wolverines after playing two seasons with the Everett Silvertips of the Western Hockey League, is expected to be selected first overall by the Calgary Flames in The Athletic's 2027 mock draft.
The Red Wings, based on the team's future odds with or without captain Dylan Larkin, are expected to drop to seventh-worst (25th overall) in the league after finishing 16th overall and out of the playoffs last year.
With the seventh overall pick, The Athletic has the Red Wings taking 6-foot-4, 200-pound center Gunnar Conboy, who had 12 goals, nine assists, 21 points and 83 penalty minutes in 32 games with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League.
"Conboy had a great first season in junior," The Athletic's Corey Pronman wrote. "He’s a tall center who’s highly athletic and physical, showing a brand of hockey that will excite evaluators.
"The pure skill and offense in his game are minor questions, but as of now, he looks good enough to be a significant NHL prospect."
Conboy is expected to return this year to the Gamblers, who are coached by former Michigan Tech forward Patrick McCadden. Conboy is committed to play at the University of Minnesota in 2027-28.
Five of The Athletic's top seven players in the first round are centers, where the Red Wings may be lacking after Dylan Larkin is traded.
The list includes 6-foot-2, 195-pound Sammy Nelson, who had 54 points in 58 games with USA Hockey's NTDP U18s last year. He'll play at Notre Dame this year.
Here's the top 10 prospects and predicted order of finish of the worst NHL teams and their projected draft picks:
1. Calgary: Landon DuPont, RHD, Michigan (NCAA)
2. Vancouver: Alexis Joseph, C, Saint John (QMJHL)
3. Chicago: Nazar Privalov, LW, CSKA (MHL)
4. Seattle: Milan Sundström, C, MoDo (Sweden Jr.)
5. Nashville: Jonah Neuenschwander, C, Biel-Bienne (NL)
6. St. Louis: Sammy Nelson, C, U.S. NTDP (USHL)
7. Detroit: Gunnar Conboy, C, Green Bay (USHL)
8. N.Y. Rangers: Timothy Kazda, RW, Chicago (USHL)
9. Winnipeg: Dima Zhilkin, RW, Saginaw (OHL)
