After slow playing their hand for multiple weeks, the Detroit Red Wings organization are upping the ante in their efforts to hire a new director of hockey operations.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported Friday that the interview process will start next week. Ownership will make it clear that the new hire or hires will be given autonomy to make all hockey operation decisions.
The hire vs. hires comes into play, according to Friedman, because the Red Wings are open minded about whether it will be a single hire or a two-person system. In other words, they could hire both a President of Hockey Operations and a general manager.
The Montreal Canadiens utilize that system. Kent Hughes reports to President of Hockey Operations Jeff Gorton. He sets the organizational strategy and Hughes makes the day-to-day decisions about what that will look like.
Tigers Exec In Mix
The Detroit Tigers have a two-person system with President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris over general manager Jeff Greenberg. Harris is the decision maker in this set-up.
Friedman confirmed what Detroit Hockey Now writers have been hearing that Greenberg is a possible candidate for a role with the Tigers. Friedman said he isn’t reporting that Friedman is the favorite.
The question is whether Greenberg is interested because he could have a greater say with the Red Wings?
Most of Greenberg’s career has been spent in baseball. He has a law degree from Columbia. His resume shows internships with the Pittsburgh Pirates, MLB Executive Offices, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs. He moved up to become a director of baseball operations in 2018 and director of professional scouting in 2019. In 2020, he was promoted to Cubs assistant general manager.
Worked for Blackhawks
The Chicago Blackhawks hired him in 2023 to become their associate general manager. Harris hired him away from the Blackhawks a year later for the Tigers job.
Greenberg grew up involved in hockey and was captain of the University of Pennsylvania club hockey team that plays in the ACHA.
CEO Chris Ilitch reportedly wants the Red Wings to have greater analytics influence. That bolster’s Greenberg’s desirability because the Tigers heavily utilize analytics.
The Detroit Free Press reported Ilitch hired a law firm to create a list of candidates for the Red Wings’ search. The Red Wings and Steve Yzerman parted ways
