The Detroit Red Wings made another move on Wednesday, acquiring veteran forward Keegan Kolesar from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft.
The trade brings a hard-nosed, physical winger to Hockeytown as Steve Yzerman continues to add experienced NHL talent ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Kolesar, 29, appeared in all 82 games for the Golden Knights last season, recording six goals and 11 assists for 17 points while serving in a bottom-six role. He also totaled 55 penalty minutes and continued to establish himself as one of Vegas’ most dependable physical forwards.
Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing 216 pounds, Kolesar brings size, toughness, and defensive reliability to Detroit’s lineup. Throughout his seven NHL seasons, he has played 439 regular-season games, producing 44 goals and 76 assists while earning a reputation as an effective forechecker and penalty killer.
One of Kolesar’s biggest assets is his postseason experience.
Since becoming a full-time NHL player, he has appeared in multiple deep playoff runs with Vegas, including the Golden Knights’ Stanley Cup championship in 2023. His ability to play a physical, disciplined game in high-pressure situations is something Detroit hopes will strengthen its bottom six as the team continues its push toward the playoffs.
The acquisition is the latest move in what has been an active day for the Red Wings.
Yzerman has prioritized adding experienced NHL players who can immediately contribute while building a roster capable of ending Detroit’s lengthy playoff drought.
