Things got a little hot in Boston Monday night when Red Sox's first baseman Willson Contreras barked at Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff for hitting him with a pitch.

A longtime member of the National League Central, Woodruff has hit Contreras six times in his 11-year career (including Monday) and 24 overall. Contreras played with the Chicago Cubs from 2016 to 2022 and the St. Louis Cardinals from 2023 to 2025.

Contreras wasn’t having any of it, saying after the game he’ll take one of the Brewers pitchers out if they hit him again.

“They always say, ‘I’m not trying to hit you.’ That gets old,” Contreras said to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. “So next time they hit me again, I’m going to take one of them out. That’s the message.”

The Red Sox had runners on first and second base and had a 1-0 lead when Woodruff hit Contreras. Woodruff had walked Contreras in his first at-bat (first inning), and finished the game 3-3 with two RBI and a home run.

The Milwaukee Brewers weren’t having any of Willson Contreras’s antics

Brewers veteran outfielder and former National League MVP, Christian Yelich, said Contreras' complaining was “nothing new” to him or his teammates.

“I mean, we’ve seen that skit for the last 10 years,” Yelich said to McCalvy. “It’s nothing new.”

Woodruff echoed Yelich’s sentiments, saying, “It seems like every year” that Contreras complains about the Brewers' pitchers pitching him inside.

“We’ve been through this – it’s, what, nine years for me? – it seems like every year,” Woodruff echoed to McCalvy. “He’s trying to play a game and he’s trying to get his side fired up. Once I knew what was going on, I wasn’t going to let it affect me on the mound. I knew I had a job to do.”

The Red Sox and Brewers meet again on Tuesday for Game 2, where sparks could fly. The Brewers will send right-hander Jacob Misioroski to the mound, while the Red Sox will counter with left-hander Garrett Crochet.
