Red Sox Still 'Stuck In Neutral' Despite Bold Coaching Staff Shakeup originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
More than one month has passed since the Boston Red Soxshockingly fired Alex Cora and much of his coaching staff on April 25 in a bold attempt to turn their season around.
Unfortunately, the Red Sox haven't shown much improvement under interim manager Chad Tracy and his new assistants, several of whom lacked prior Major League experience.
Under Cora, Boston was last in the AL East with a 10-17 record and a negative-13 run differential. Under Tracy, the Red Sox are 12-14 with a negative-four run differential and remain in last place.
They have improved, but not enough and not as much as hoped. Boston is now a season-worst nine games below .500 at 22-31 entering play on Wednesday.
Craig Breslow fired Alex Cora and six coaches one month ago Tuesday. Has it made a difference?
“I certainly wouldn’t look back at our win-loss record over the last month and say it was this incredible success”

"The changes are in the past. There’s no telling where the Red Sox would have been at this point if the firings hadn’t happened," Jen McCaffrey wrote for The Athletic on Wednesday (subscription required). "The one truth is that the changes did not spark the team to a dramatic turnaround. One month later, they remain stuck in neutral."
Much of that is on the offense, which has scored the fewest runs in baseball since Cora was fired despite showing some signs of progress. Losing Roman Anthony, Trevor Story and Garrett Crochet to injury hasn't helped, either, robbing the team of three of its best players.
The Red Sox have also struggled at Fenway Park, posting the worst home record in baseball. That's made it impossible to get hot or sustain any momentum for more than a series or two.
“The reality is we have a hole to dig out of,” Craig Breslow told McCaffrey. “I think the thing we can do is focus day to day on doing everything possible to go out and win a game. We’re not going to make up eight games under .500 overnight, we’re not going to become the best offense in baseball overnight.”
After four straight losses, that hole has only gotten deeper.
