Aroldis Chapman is likely to be one of the best relievers on the trade market this summer.
With the Red Sox 12 games under .500 and 13.5 games out of first place in the AL East, there’s an increasing possibility the All-Star closer will be dealt ahead of next month’s deadline.
However, there’s one team that Chapman would have an issue going to: The New York Yankees.
Chapman was a three-time All-Star during his time in the Bronx, but things ended badly. Amid a tumultuous season in 2022, he missed a practice ahead of the ALDS and was left off New York’s postseason roster. General manager Brian Cashman blasted Chapman in the media, though the closer claimed he had permission to leave.
“What happened, happened,” Chapman told ESPN Deportes. “If something like this were to happen, I believe someone from this organization should apologize first.”
Chapman clarified to Enrique Rojas that the “someone” he was referring to was Cashman.
Ultimately, Chapman has no control over his destination. The 38-year-old is under contract through the end of the 2026 season.
“I’m in a position right now where I’m under contract and I don’t have any control over my contract,” Chapman said. “I don’t have any clauses or anything with any team, but [going to New York] would be something that, first of all, I would have to talk to the manager about. Sit down and talk and see what would happen.”

Though the Red Sox said they were looking to trade for a bat three weeks ago, they’re now likely to be sellers at the deadline following a nosedive in the standings, per president Sam Kennedy.
“With the passage of time, you have to take an honest assessment and look and see where you are,” Kennedy said on WEEI’s Greg Hill Show. “At the current moment, there are a lot of discussions going on in terms of improvement and how we get this thing back on track. Looking at every single area of the roster and player personnel. (Craig Breslow) and his team are doing that.
“But look, let’s be honest. Unless things change dramatically, we may have to pivot here from what our initial planning was,” Kennedy added. “It wouldn’t be responsible to do otherwise. But we’re here in mid-June. We need to see what happens over the next couple weeks and then we’ll reassess.”
