Injury-plagued Boston Red Sox pitcher Walker Buehler made it through spring training and the season’s first month without any issues.
May hasn’t brought the same luck. Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced that Buehler has a right shoulder issue and could potentially miss his next start.
Cora added that Buehler, a two-time All-Star with the Los Angeles Dodgers, returned to Boston for testing.
“We’re working on a few things regarding Walker,” Cora told reporters before a 4-2 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. “We’ll see where we’re at over the weekend. He hasn’t bounced back the way we wanted, so we have to wait.”

Buehler is no stranger to injuries, having missed part of 2022 and all of 2023 following Tommy John surgery. He also spent time on the IL last year with a hip problem, though he made his way back for the Dodgers and induced the World Series-ending groundout.
Boston signed Buehler to a one-year, $21 million prove-it contract in December, and he’s certainly given the Red Sox an early return on their investment. Although Bueler won four of his first six starts, he entered May with a 4.28 ERA and 0.1 bWAR.
Buehler owns a 29-9 K-BB ratio over 33.2 innings, and his 1.22 WHIP is slightly better than the league average (1.29). More importantly, Buehler has definitely resembled his old form in recent weeks.
The 30-year-old recorded a 2.59 ERA and averaged six innings over his last four starts. Opponents only hit .207 against Buehler in that time, and he’s helped keep the Red Sox above .500.
It is unclear who would replace Buehler in the rotation. Former Chicago White Sox starter Lucas Giolito made his season debut Wednesday, allowing three runs over six innings in Boston’s 7-6 collapse.
