BOSTON — The Red Sox reinstated left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe from the 15-day injured list and optioned lefty Tyler Samaniego to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday.
Samaniego, a 27-year-old rookie, was sent down despite a 1.04 ERA. He allowed just two earned runs and 13 hits in 17 ⅓ innings over 18 relief outings. Opponents batted .213 against him.
“It’s tough,” interim manager Chad Tracy said. “He’s done well here. A lot of lefties in the bullpen and we have an optional lefty and that’s part of the equation.”
The Red Sox have three left-handers — Coulombe, Jovani Morán and Aroldis Chapman — in their bullpen.
“He was disappointed as most all guys are when you have those conversations with them,” Tracy said.
Coulombe missed 24 games on the 15-day injured list with cervical spasms. He has a 5.63 ERA (eight innings, five earned runs), 1.50 WHIP and .281 opponents’ batting average in 12 outings this season. The Red Sox signed the 36-year-old veteran reliever to a one-year, $1 million contract on March 12.
Coulombe has appeared in 355 major league games with six different teams over 12 big league seasons.
Boston and Minnesota will play the final game of their three-game series on Sunday. The Sox will try to avoid the sweep after losing 8-6 on Friday and 4-2 on Saturday.
