Once upon a time, Nick Burdi was once one of the most dominant relief pitchers in college baseball and a top prospect for the Minnesota Twins.

The Louisville product posted a 0.49 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 15.8 K/9 with 18 saves in 32 appearances during his junior season on campus, and the Twins made him the No. 46 overall pick in the 2014 MLB draft.

"College closers are often quick-to-the-big leagues relievers, but not ninth-inning guys once they get there. Burdi has the chance to be a Major League closer, a reason some thought he could go in the first round, so the Twins were likely happy the hard-throwing right-hander was still available in the second round," ready his draft scouting report at MLB.com while referencing his triple-digit fastball.

Unfortunately, injuries derailed his ascent through the minors, and he entered the 2024 season with a 9.39 ERA over just 19 career appearances in the majors. He caught on with the New York Yankees last season and pitched to a 1.86 ERA in 12 games before a hip injury landed him on the injured list and eventually led to his release.

The Boston Red Sox quietly signed him to a minor league deal in February and he has been dealing at Triple-A Worcester, posting a 0.61 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and a 22-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 14.2 innings, tallying two wins and two saves along the way.

With setup relievers Justin Slate and Garrett Whitlock stumbling of late, Burdi could get a look as a potential contributor who could pitch his way into a high-leverage role.
