The Boston Red Sox already knew that Danny Coulombe was likely on the way out of town.

On Sunday, they had designated Coulombe for assignment. That removed him from the 40-man roster and placed him on waivers.

And now six days later, on Saturday July 18, Coulombe has been released, according to MLB's official transaction log.

That means he cleared waivers and declined a potential assignment to Triple-A Worcester.

He'll head to free agency and be able to sign anywhere. He could sign back with the Red Sox organization, too, if he doesn't find a better offer somewhere.

He had a 4.50 ERA through 29 relief outings, including 37 pitches in his final appearance with the Red Sox.

Coulombe's Spotrac page, which has his contract details, shows that if he had pitched in 30 games this season for Boston, he makes $75,000.

He'd make another $75,000 each if he pitched in 35, then 40, then 45 games.

As mentioned above, Coulombe has appeared in 29 games this season for the Red Sox.

So the Red Sox saved a little money with this timing.

The 36-year old Coulombe will simply be hoping he can find another opportunity somewhere sooner rather than later.
