TAMPA — The Red Sox left open the possibility of using an opener for Wednesday’s series finale against the Rays at Steinbrenner Field. But that won’t be the case as lefty Sean Newcomb will take his turn in the rotation, potentially for the final time.

“Sean is gonna start,” Cora said after a 7-4 Red Sox win Tuesday.

Newcomb, who allowed six runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out six batters in four innings Friday night in Chicago, was always in line to pitch Wednesday on regular rest but the Red Sox had their starter listed as “TBD” throughout the week.

Newcomb made the team as the No. 5 starter behind Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Walker Buehler and Richard Fitts and has pitched three times, logging a 4.97 ERA (but a 2.56 FIP) in 12 ⅔ innings. He has allowed 11 runs (seven earned) on 20 hits while posting a 15-to-7 strikeout-to-walk-ratio. The veteran Mass. native is likely nearing the end of his time in the rotation with Brayan Bello (who pitches Wednesday for at Double-A) set to rejoin the team next week and Lucas Giolito (who pitched Tuesday for Portland) not far behind.

The Red Sox have not yet revealed their rotation for their four-game wraparound series with the White Sox that starts Friday. Crochet could pitch the opener on regular rest with Fitts (mild pectoral strain) on the injured list and unavailable. The Red Sox could also call up someone like Hunter Dobbins (who is in line for Friday) to pitch that game. Houck and Buehler will follow Crochet and Bello would be in line to pitch on regular rest on Patriots Day or with an extra day Tuesday against Seattle.
