The 2026 season hasn’t gone the way Jahmai Jones, or most of the Detroit Tigers, have hoped.
The Tigers designated Jones for assignment on July 9. Five days later, with the MLB schedule at a standstill during the All-Star break, the Tigers swung a trade to send Jones to the Boston Red Sox for a player to be named later.
In a corresponding roster move, Nate Eaton was optioned to Triple-A Worcester.

Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com was first to report news of the trade.
Jones, 29, was slashing .137/.219/.221 in 57 games as a reserve outfielder and designated hitter.
Jones has a career .742 OPS against left-handed pitchers, and figures to be a late-game replacement against southpaws. Red Sox outfielders have a collective .784 OPS against lefties, but have used Jarren Duran sparingly against lefties.

Boston gained a 40-man roster spot when they designated left-handed reliever Danny Coulombe for assignment just before the All-Star break.
The deadline for teams to make trades involving major league players falls on Aug. 3.
Acquiring Jones is hardly a splash, but it gives the Red Sox a few weeks to assess whether he can help them for the stretch run, or if they need to make a bigger move before the deadline.

For the Tigers, cutting ties with Jones could be the first of many moves between now and the deadline. The team is 44-52, fourth place in the American League Central and 3.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners for the third and final AL Wild Card berth.
Detroit entered the season with aspirations of making a deeper postseason run after early exits each of the last two seasons. Now, they’re fighting for a Wild Card berth.
Regardless of whether they buy or sell before the deadline, the Tigers had little incentive to let Jones work through his struggles.
Jones is a career .214/.297/363 hitter in 198 games with the Angels, Orioles, Brewers, Yankees and Tigers.
