The Boston Red Sox are getting closer to seeing Adley Rutschman take the field.
The team announced on Friday that their newly acquired catcher would be making a rehab start with Triple-A Worcester this weekend in what could be the final step of his rehab.
“Adley Rutschman begins a rehab assignment in Worcester tomorrow and will catch five innings,” Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo said in a post on X.
Red Sox Had Been Hazy on Adley Rutschman’s Rehab
Prior to Friday’s announcement, the team was hesitant to put a date on when Rutschman could make a rehab appearance.
âItâs possible. I’ll just leave it at that,â Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said on Thursday about the possibility of him playing over the weekend, via MLB.com. âWe have not discussed an exact date on that yet. He’s doing some more stuff today, doing some more check-ins and we’re still ironing down what’s going to happen there based on how he feels and what everybody thinks, and so we don’t know yet. But I would answer that and say it’s possible.â
Rutschman has been out since the Baltimore Orioles placed him on the 10-day injured list on July 18, suffering from inflammation in his left wrist.
More Good News for the Red Sox
Rutschman was the biggest trade-deadline acquisition for the surging Red Sox, who have won 32 of the last 37 games. As MLB.com reporter Ian Browne noted, Boston has more help on the way as Roman Anthony is nearing his own return from injury.
“Already the hottest team in the Majors, Boston should look even more potent offensively for the stretch run. Not only will Rutschman be part of the equation but so, too, should Roman Anthony,” Browne wrote. “The outfielder â out since May 5 with a partially torn tendon in his left wrist/hand â continues to make progress with his hitting program in Fort Myers, Fla.”
Browne noted that Anthony has made significant progress over the last two weeks, advancing to high-velocity batting practice.
