The Boston Red Sox have an interesting decision to make about whether they will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline.

Boston is struggling this season at the bottom of the AL East, but is still realistically in the playoff picture as the team is less than six games out of a wild card spot. Making a run before the trade deadline would have a huge impact on the Red Sox's decision-making, but it will be an uphill battle.

NESN broadcaster and former Red Sox player Lou Merloni joined the "ITM Podcast" on Wednesday to discuss the MLB trade deadline and how he would do a mix of buying and selling if he were the Red Sox.

“If I could actually add an impact bat infielder, you can do both (buy and sell at the deadline)," Merloni told Joey Copponi and Scott Neville on the ITM Podcast. “And I know pets heads would fall off and everybody would lose their (expletive), but if you can add a guy at the deadline, even though you’re trading away a starter and a reliever, but you can add a bat because you’re thinking of 2027 and 2028, I think you try to do that as well.

“At the deadline, what’s the biggest need? Bullpen. What’s the biggest need? Starting pitching. You have pieces like that, that teams are going to be coming after you for, and you may be one of only a few teams that may actually be sellers, given what this league looks like right now.”

After an offseason spent bolstering the pitching staff, Boston is in desperate need of an impact bat at the trade deadline. The Red Sox have scored the second-fewest runs in baseball this season and need to turn their offense around, even if they may have to part ways with a pitcher to do so.

It's unclear what the Red Sox will do at the trade deadline, but one clear thing is how this team needs to make a change moving forward if they want to return to the postseason again this year.
