Red Sox could revisit Nolan Arenado trade idea to fix struggling lineup originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox are missing quite a bit of thump in their lineup, with a bunch of supposed key hitters in the middle of massive slumps. One of those hitters is Caleb Durbin, who is still ice cold at the plate.
Many ideas have been floated around, and the consensus is sending him down to AAA to fix his swing might be the right thing to do. That would mean the Sox would need to find a replacement and upgrade at third base, but with the bar Durbin’s set, it shouldn’t be that hard.
With that in mind, entertaining an old idea might suit Boston: trading for Nolan Arenado.

Last season, it seemed like Arenado was definitely succumbing to Father Time. To begin this season, it was pretty much confirmed. However, after a few changes to how he practices and hits, Arenado is back.
On the season, he’s slashing .273/.350/.448/.797 with seven doubles, six home runs, and 21 RBI in 43 games played. However, in his past seven games, he’s hitting .326 with a 1.000 OPS.
Also, he’s arguably one of the best defensive third baseman of all time. A nice thing to have at one of the hardest defensive positions in the sport.

Now that Arenado is riding this comeback, his value has definitely shot up in any trade. Luckily, the Sox have multiple things the DBacks need in spades: starting pitching and outfielders.
Boston already has one player in each of those positions they want to part with as well, in Brayan Bello and Jarren Duran. Both are having bad years this year, but their peaks from past seasons keep their value up.
If the Sox were to offer the pair, it could work. Throw in a mid-to-low tier prospect, and Arizona may just bite.

Getting Arenado would fill multiple needs for the Sox: Another power bat in the lineup, great defense at third, and more veteran leadership for the clubhouse. Also, reuniting with his old teammates in Willson Contreras and Sonny Gray would be nice.
He’s also ridiculously cheap now; He’s set to make $5 million this year and $6 million next year. Hopefully, the Boston front office entertain this idea, and get to work on making it happen.
