Red Sox cannot afford to trade Willson Contreras after his shocking offensive resurgence originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

While they lost last night, the Boston Red Sox were able to win their first series at home in a real long while. Their wins can be attributed to the offense actually being cohesive, and rallying around one man.

That man being Willson Contreras. Contreras has been one of the lone bastions of the Red Sox’s offense, as one of the only consistent bats on the team. No one expected him to be this good either, after looking at his stats from previous years.

Before this season, it seemed Contreras was on the decline. From 2023-2025 with the St. Louis Cardinals, he went from slashing .262/.380/.468/.890 to .257/.344/.447/.791, hitting up to 20 home runs a season. So, when it was pretty much set that he was the power bat replacing Alex Bregman, Boston fans were understandably angry.

However, not many people could have seen this season coming.

In 2026, Contreras has been a top six hitter in all of baseball. He’s slashing .304/.396/.570/.965 with 11 doubles, 16 home runs, and 43 RBI in just 67 games.

Just last night, he hit two home runs in one game to try to help Boston with a comeback. Right now, his OPS and wRC+ is only behind names like Yordan Alvarez, Ben Rice, Shohei Ohtani, James Wood, and Nick Kurtz.

Fenway has been very kind to him, as he is one of, if not the best hitter in his respective home park. He has more pull-side homers at home than anyone else does in their homes.

Even if this season ends up with nothing special, the Sox cannot let this man go. He has two years and a club option left on his contract, adding up to $55 million. At a price like that for the services he provides, the Sox cannot deal him somewhere else.

It’s not like the Sox are going into a rebuild either. They have the bones to be a true contender, they just need a few pieces to plug some major holes, like a star bat or two to complement Contreras’.

Hopefully, they realize this, and get to work on who they want to pair with their superstar first baseman.
