As the Red Sox search for offensive help, they are leaving no stone unturned, including inquiring about one of the game's brightest young stars.

Boston reportedly called the Reds about the availability of Elly De La Cruz, the 24-year-old star shortstop in his fourth major league season. De La Cruz wasn't someone who was on the trade market, but with the Reds in last place in the NL Central, they are more likely to sell than buy.

While those talks didn't appear to go anywhere, they do show how motivated the Red Sox are to add to their lineup. Here's a look at Boston's interest in De La Cruz.

Red Sox interested in Elly De La Cruz​

MassLive's Sean McAdam reported on Saturday that the Red Sox called the Reds about Elly De La Cruz and Hunter Greene in their search for upgrades. De La Cruz is considered the Reds' biggest star, but Cincinnati apparently at least listened to Boston's pitch.

However, those talks stalled, with the Reds not particularly motivated to move their best player. Therefore, Cincinnati reportedly would only trade the young star if the team would get an overwhelming and overpay of an offer that includes players close to the majors, as the team is hoping to compete in the near-term despite the disappointing 2026 season.

Therefore, it's likely that the Red Sox will look elsewhere for their search for trade upgrades.

De La Cruz is a true five-tool player. as he has at least 20 stolen bases in each of his first four season in the majors. While he does strike out more than most, De La Cruz is a switch hitter with a ton of power and speed, and he plays a difficult defensive position at shortstop.

Elly De La Cruz contract​

De La Cruz is under team control for 3.5 more years, as he will be arbitration-eligible for the first time this coming offseason. Therefore, the Reds don't have any motivation to trade him unless they are blown away by an offer, since Cincinnati doesn't have to worry about a contract extension for another few years.
