Red Sox's Payton Tolle Has Dominated The Yankees This Year originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox rotation features two rookies with sky-high expectations, and one of them has shown up in two of the biggest games of the year.
Anytime the Red Sox face the New York Yankees, the stakes are just a little bit higher than just any regular-season game. This season, Payton Tolle has started two of those games, and he has been a nightmare for Yankees hitters. In 13 innings against the Yankees this year, he has 18 strikeouts and has given up just one run and four hits.
He has a 0.54 WHIP in those two games, and he is proving why he was one of the top pitching prospects in all of baseball. On the season, he has a 2.78 ERA, the best in the Red Sox rotation this year.
The Red Sox entered Saturday five games out of a wild card spot in the American League. They have very little room for error, and Tolle was pretty much perfect against one of the best teams in all of baseball. The Red Sox can sweep the Yankees with a win on Saturday, and hopefully go on a run worth making movies about.
It has not been a pretty start for the Red Sox, but the season is not over, and Friday night's performance by Tolle is an indication that the team still has some fight left.
