The Boston Red Sox are approaching the 2026 MLB trade deadline with a clear need to upgrade their offense, specifically in the infield.
After losing Curtis Mead to the injured list just two at-bats into his Red Sox career, the Red Sox's need for more offensive upside from the infield only grew larger.
ESPN's Buster Olney is reporting that the Red Sox, amid such a need and desire to upgrade at shortstop, have "checked into" the availability of Miami Marlins All-Star shortstop Otto Lopez in what would be a very interesting deadline pickup.

"A really interesting name: The Red Sox have checked into the availability of Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez, who is in the midst of a special season; he leads all hitters with a .328 average," Olney writes.
The shortstop trade market isn't very robust, with Houston Astros' Jeremy Pena, Los Angeles Angels' Zach Neto, and Washington Nationals' CJ Abrams being the clear best options who could be dealt this summer.
But now, Lopez has become someone worth keeping an eye on. If the Marlins are willing to not only listen to offers for Lopez but also accept a good one that comes across their table, then he might be the best possible upgrade for the Red Sox.
The 27-year-old is under club control through 2029 and is having a breakout season for Miami. He earned an All-Star nod this year, as he had 5.3 bWAR in 104 games with an MLB-best 137 hits, 27 doubles, and a .328 batting average.

Lopez also has seven triples, nine home runs, 48 RBIs, 22 stolen bases, 64 runs scored, 23 walks, and an .854 OPS and 140 OPS+.
The Red Sox would have to spend a ton to acquire Lopez, but after parting with Connelly Early for Mead, they've shown a willingness to spend to acquire help at this year's deadline already.
Like Mead, Lopez was DFA'd during his big league career, as he struggled early with the Toronto Blue Jays. But, with the Marlins, he's been awesome and is someone who'd be a huge help for Boston.
The Red Sox have checked in with the Marlins about Lopez's trade availability, and he's someone that Red Sox fans should get to know, as Craig Breslow might be gearing up for another blockbuster this summer.
