CHICAGO — After almost a week of uncertainty, Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras finally got some clarity Thursday, an hour before gametime — he’ll begin his suspension immediately for his part in a bench-clearing brawl on June 30.
The suspension, originally set for seven games, was reduced to five following the appeal process.
Contreras, who suffered a contusion of the left foot Wednesday night after fouling off a ball on his instep, was not going to play in Thursday’s afternoon contest at Rate Field against the White Sox. Given the soreness he was experiencing, he may not have been available to play Friday night, when the Sox are due to begin a weekend series against the New York Mets at Citi Field.
He’ll now miss the final four games of the first half — Thursday in Chicago and all three games in New York this weekend — and will be eligible to return to the lineup in the second game of a day-night doubleheader on July 17. Coming out of the All-Star break, the Red Sox play two against the Tampa Bay Rays that day, with Contreras available for the nightcap.
Contreras has been the team’s best hitter all sesson, and leads them in virtually every offensive category. Before being injured in the third inning Wednesday night, Contreras had knocked in eight runs in the previous three games.
The suspension does not impact his availability for the All-Star Game next Tuesday in Philadelphia. He’ll be able to take part, as well as honoring his commitment to participate in the Home Run Derby the previous night.
That appearance will mark the fourth time Contreras has been an All-Star. His brother, William, a catcher with the Milwaukee Brewers, will play for the NL All-Stars.
