CHICAGO — Willson Contreras knows his time is coming. Sooner or later, the Red Sox first baseman is going to serve a suspension that was handed down last week for his participation in a bench-clearing brawl.
Maybe he’ll get a game or two shaved off after an appeal hearing. But eventually, he’s going to miss a handful of games.
Until then, Contreras seems intent on making the most of his opportunities. Over the weekend, he connected for three-run homers in each of the final two games of the Red Sox’ sweep of the Angels. Last night, he contributed a two-run double to knock in two runs in the Red Sox’ 8-1 cakewalk of a win over the Chicago White Sox.
If you’re keeping score at home, that’s a total of eight RBI over his last three games.
“He’s been really, really good,” said interim manager Chad Tracy. “I mean, he’s been really good all year. But he’s been particularly good on this road trip. He’s taken some big at-bats for us.”
Contreras insisted he’s not focused on the upcoming suspension.
“To be honest, when I’m playing, I don’t try to think too much about the past,” he said. “I’m just going out there to try to compete and try have a good at-bat. I feel good at the plate; I won’t lie. But it feels like this week has been good. I’m trying to get pitches in the strike zone. I stick to my pitch, try to get off tough pitches out of the strike zone and that’s been the difference.”
Several players in the clubhouse noted that the team is playing with a renewed energy of late along with a certain collective looseness.
Whatever the approach is, it’s working.
“We’re playing good,” said Contreras. “We’re carrying really good energy. We know we have to play the 27 outs. We as a group of hitters, we’re doing a great job and the bullpen and starting pitching are doing great. We have to keep that same pace.”

Through it all, he knows there will be reckoning for his actions. Until then, he plans to keep mashing.
“I can’t control what’s going on outside,” he said. “I know I have something pending with MLB. But like I said, whatever decision they make, I’m going to respect it. When I get here, I try to forget about everything. When I’m with my guys playing, you have to play baseball. That’s why I get paid – I’m an employee and I have to show up and work."
