The Toronto Blue Jays' injuries troubles went bad to worse this past week.
Ace pitcher and American League strikeout leader (before his injury) Dylan Cease landed on the 15-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain.
The Blue Jays appear optimistic Cease's stay on the IL won't be long-term and are "hopeful" he'll throw a bullpen this weekend.
Early indications are that Cease's injury will be on the shorter side, but Toronto still needed a pitcher to fill his spot in the rotation for a game against the Baltimore Orioles, which takes place at 7:05 p.m. ET at Camden Yards in Baltimore.
That honor will be going to left-handed pitcher Adam Macko, who will be making his first career start in the process.
Macko, who was originally picked in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of high school, was recalled from the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons on May 17 and made his major league debut a day later.
The southpaw has been flawless out of the bullpen this season. He's yet to allow a run, earned or otherwise, and has fanned four batters in 4.1 innings pitched across six appearances. He's allowed four total hits and the only free base he's issued was via a hit-by-pitch.
Despite him being off to a great start to his major league career, Mack will have a tall task to replace the production of Cease.
Toronto's ace, who was signed to a seven-year, $210 million deal this offseason, has a 3.05 ERA and has struck out 92 batters in 62 innings pitched across 11 starts this season.
Macko has had an eventful past season. He was extended a non-roster invitation to spring training for the first time in his career, pitched for Canada in the 2026 World Baseball Classic and begun a season in Triple-A for the first time.
Macko has experience as a starting pitcher. He was brought up as one through his first several years in the minor leagues before the Blue Jays moved him exclusively to the bullpen this season.
Toronto entered Friday's game against Baltimore in third place in the American League East with a 28-29 record. A win would put the Blue Jays back at .500 for the first time since a 3-0 loss against the Chicago White Sox on April 5.
The Blue Jays currently occupy the third and final wild card spot in the American League.
