Moist.......Can we say the word "thighs" in mixed company?
Context is important. Just having a missing 'i' will not necessarily move it from being derogatory. Example, SHT would be understood even with the 'i' missing.I would say yes. The extra letter is what makes it derogatory and changes the meaning. With him having a last name with two Capitol letter I would say that MLF is OK.
This was actually very helpful, thank you. I wondered what the IIRC was. But even if the acronym was appropriate, I'm betting we won't see IANAL or KISS....lolDepending on the word processor you use, you can code in acronyms to be replaced by the full word. After you type the acronym and hit the space bar, you get the auto replace word. This will do away with most acronym errors—but proof read as well. Be sure to have a space before and after the acronym or some processors will auto-replace mid-word.
A friend of mine wrote a sincere letter of condolences to his neighbor after the loss of her husband and sent it to her entire family. He ended the note with ‘LOL.’ When he copied me on the letter, I was surprised/puzzled that he would end his gracious letter with ‘Laughing Out Loud.’ He responded that he thought LOL meant ‘Lots of Love.’ A second letter to the family, this time apologizing. The widow got back and said the LOL would have given her deceased husband a good laugh.

Seriously ?I genuinely didn't realize how the acronym could ever be considered offensive in a non professional setting.
